Ramblings from a computer nerd slash car guy.

Live Free or Die HardDie Hard was a Success

I have to admit, I really was worried about it being a PG-13 Movie.  I know it has a new producer, but it really was much better then I expected.

The movie was great.  Obviously, the technology in this movie is ahead of its time (it usually is like this in movies), but the idea behind it is actually quite interesting.

Bruce, being as old as he is now, is still a fantastic actor.  He still can make you laugh even in a serious part.  There were lots of small simple references to the previous movies, which make it even funnier.

There is lots of guns, car chases, wrecks, explosions, and of course, computer hacking (actually, hacking is the premise of the movie).

Anyone who likes bruse and the previous die hards will love this one. Personally, I feel like this is my favorate one yet.  I hope they do another one.  These are the types of movies that can go on and on with many different story lines.  The only problem with that is they need to outdo the previous, which will be hard after this one.

Great Job Bruce!  I give this movie an A

Today I added a 404 redirect module to Snowcovered.  This module is very easy to use and extreamly important to anyone who is moving to DNN from their oldschool website.

Let me know if you have any questions or need assistance with it.

I could not find on DNNs website or on Google a way to configure custom 404 pages inside of DotNetNuke.   This was a little frustrating because I just ported over my website with nearly 6000 links (according to Google) and I did not want my viewers to be sent to a page with nothing on it.

So, after thinking about it a little bit, I realized I could do this within IIS specifically for any DNN website.

Create a new web in IIS and point it to your DNN install. This new web will need to be configured with all the proper host headers (and removed from the old DNN website host header list).  Once you have it up and running, create your new DNN 404 page.  Make it hidden so it does not show up on your menu bar, but is accessible to your visitors.

Get the URL for this page, edit the properties for your new website, and click on the tab "Custom Errors".   Find the error code 404, and set the absolute path to it (without the http and the domain name).

Test it and it works great! Example:  http://www.badassride.com/thisdoesnotexist

IIS Properties:

Cons: This creates another memory instance of the worker process so it uses more memory on your server. I would recommend only doing this for your portals that request it.

I am working on a hand full of projects where I dont want to send people that come in off search engines to 404 pages.  So I wrote a module this weekend that will take the 404 info (as seen in my other blog about how to create 404 pages), and redirect them to the correct page, without them even being bothered by a notice telling them the file is not found.

It was a very simple module (as I expected), and so far it looks and works good.  Now I just have to do the hard part... create all the redirects.   I am thinking I will extend the module to record links that were not handled, so mappings could be easly created for them.

Update: This module is available for purchase on SnowCovered ( http://www.snowcovered.com/Snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=7640 )

I recently released a new version of my Lightbox Scrapbook onto SnowCovered.  This weekend I was running a trace on the SQL server looking for issues, and found that the Yahoo Slurp spider did not like the way I was running my scrapbook.  Infact, yahoo was pulling all of the non url friendly urls from DNN for some reason.  This bothers me because I dont want my non-friendly pages that I create in DNN to be listed as Default.aspx?tabid=xxx&etc.

Anyhow, I just released a new version last night that uses the DNN API to create the friendly URLs.  It did break the existing URL structure, but this one should be final.

You can view this scrapbook in action on this website by clicking on "Scrapbook" on the navigation bar.  You will see the LightBox for DotNetNuke in action!

Enjoy!

1404 Movie PosterWe have been watching a lot of John Cusack movies lately, but his movies dont really pan out to anything good. We have rented numerous old 80s movies of his, and about an hour into it, we are ready to turn it off ("Better off Dead", "One Crazy Summer" and a few others).  This one was better than those old ones, but still, not worth watching in theaters.

The movie plot has John Cusack going from haunted house to haunted house looking for ghosts, but there really isn’t anything crazy scary in it.  Even when he is staying in Room 1408, it’s not off the hook scary.   I’ll admit, a couple times I found myself interested, but then it took a drop off to a long drawn out scene.

I love Samuel L. Jackson but he hardly played a roll in this movie.  That bumbed me out also. I wish he was more involved.

Overall, I gave this a C-.   I feel that was nice.  3 of the 4 people we went with agreed that it was not that good.  One of them really liked it.

Evan AlmightyIf anyone has ever seen 40 year old virgin, bruce almighty, or any of those movies with Steve Carell and enjoyed them, then this will be another movie to add to your list.  Steve plays a politician who wants to change the world, but when God (Morgan Freeman) comes down to have him do it, Steve thinks God is just some crazy old man.

The movie was full of laughter and does not leave you waiting for something to happen.  It had a good story to it, and I am personally not into biblical type stories.

Defintally a movie for the family, or couples who enjoy Steve Carell.  I give this movie a B+.  Way to go Steve and Morgan.  Link to Yahoo Movies

Anthony Potter to be my best man
Shape to be one of my groomsmen.

I still have a few other of my friends to ask.  I am quite excited for this event, and its years out!

Today I put up my car on Ebay.  It was a specail deal for the 16th and 17th to list a car for 1 dollar, instead of the normal 40.  I love my car, but its just time to move on and spend my money on property.  Someone is going to get a steal on it.  I bought it for 63k in Feb 06.  On ebay for less then 50k.

Silver SurferThis movie was great!  It had a great story line and a great love story behind it. It was not a crappy love story like Spiderman. It actually was very good.  The action was great, and the story line was perfect. I would actually give this an A.  I will most definataly go and see this again.  Good for all ages especially if they like the other one.
